Factors to consider when selecting LED Lights for the Bathroom.
Due to the range of LED light bulbs available today you can select LED ceiling lights or LED down lights for your bathroom. The appeal of LED lights is that apart from helping create the right mood for your bathroom they are environment-friendly and offer energy savings over traditional lighting.
It is vitally important when deciding on LED Lights for you bathroom that you pick LED bulbs that are suitable for use in moist or damp locations. To help you decide upon which LED lighting is suitable for the bathroom you need to check the IP rating. The IP (Ingress Protection) rating gives an indication as to the suitability for the location you plan to utilise them by providing an understanding against the level of protection afforded against moisture and dust.
IP labelling takes the form of two numbers after the letter IP. The numbers refer to the level of protection offered – the first number being the defence against foreign bodies typically dust and the second number highlighting the water resistance of the enclosure.
The following table describes the levels of moisture protection.
0 = No Protection.
1 = Protection against condensation.
2 = Protection against water droplets equivalent to 3mm of rainfall per minute.
3 = Protection against spraying water up to 60 degrees from vertical.
4 = Protection against water splashing from any direction.
5 = Can withstand low-pressure jets of water from any direction.
6 = Can withstand powerful jets of water from any direction.
7 = Capable of temporary immersion (30 minutes) at a depth of no more than 1 metre.
8 = Hermetically sealed. Capable of prolonged immersion under high pressure.
Individual Bathroom Zones.
Another factor to consider when buying LED Bathroom Lighting is to know that the bathroom is split into 3 specific zones and the lights you purchase must be designed for the zone in which you intend for them to be installed. The individual zones within a bathroom are zone 0. zone 1 and zone 2. Each zone has its own specific set of parameters that each light needs to correspond to.
Zone 0 is inside the bath or shower cubicle itself. Any fittings in this zone must offer protection against complete immersion ie IP67
Zone 1 is the area above a bath or shower tray up to 2.25 metres. Any light fittings in this area need a minimum rating of IP65
Zone 2 is a parameter of 0.6 metres outside the bath or shower tray and up to 2.25 metres high. In this zone an IP rating of IP44 is required
The majority of LED down lights have an IP65 rating making them appropriate for use in zone 1 and 2 of the bathroom.
